Sanrio's Kuromi Character Gets 1st Film in 2027

Sanrio announced on Saturday that its Kuromi character will star in her first film, which the distributor GAGA open in Japan next year. The company made the announcement with an English-subtitled video message from Kuromi on Halloween, which is also Kuromi's birthday.

The film's website location indicates that the film will have the title "Kuromi the Movie." The website and the video message's description say that "release information for territories outside Japan will be announced once confirmed."

Kuromi made her debut not in Sanrio's own character goods line, but in the television anime Onegai My Melody in April 2005. She gradually became a popular character in her own right, charting in the top 5 in the Sanrio Character Ranking poll in the last six years in a row. She already starred in two series of Kuromi's Pretty Journey anime shorts in 2023 and 2024, as well as a stop-motion anime My Melody & Kuromi on Netflix in July 2025.
